There are certain items used during the construction of a house, that may not seem as lofty as other construction materials but these items are used to ensure that the construction is robust. They also play a major role in rendering beauty to the house as well. Elements that are required for the construction of a house includes Fascias, Soffits, Cladding and Barge Boards. It is important to understand how they differ and how well do they work together. Let us understand the meaning of these terms first.
Fascia
The word Fascia has been derived from the Latin word “Fascia” which means “band, bandage, ribbon, swathe”. The fascia refers to a band that runs horizontally along the edge of the roof and is situated vertically right underneath it. It forms the outer surface of the cornice and its visibility to the outside observer also makes it an important element in the beautification of the house. The Fascia or fascia board is used to hold the rain gutter and also caps the ends of the rafter outside a building.
Soffits
The word Soffits have been derived from the French word Soffite which means “formed as a ceiling”. This word in turn has been derived from the Latin word “suffigere” which means “to fix underneath. Simply put, a soffit is the architectural element that describes the element on the underside of any construction. For example, soffits are used under cornice or arches.
Bargeboard
The Bargeboard is a board that is fastened underneath projecting gables of a roof. These boards help strengthen these projections and offer them support.
Cladding
Cladding is the process/element of application of one material over the other to help protect it from elements of weather and serve as control element.
It is easy to see how the four construction elements work together in building a house. Whenever one uses Fascias, the roof is rendered good looks and it becomes more durable with the support offered by Fascias. The Soffits automatically are required underneath to seal off any weather intrusion such as humidity or cold. The soffit works well with other construction structures too. Its primary role is offering support and prevention of weather related afflictions to the house. Any roof-particularly the ones which are sloping make a house look stupendous when they are jutting out. This makes a house look like it is straight out of a fairy tale book. The Barge boards make this structure possible and durable. During winters, the roof gables hold under the weight of the snow. The Cladding ensures that whether it is soffits, fascias or bargeboards, they are insulated from humidity and heat. This helps retain the ambience indoors irrespective of the weather outside.
